Sacco "tri's" at Cayuga Lake.
| The old adage that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link was proven once again at the 1st annual Cayuga Lake Triathlon held Sunday, August 3rd, in famed Taughannock Falls State Park outside Ithaca, NY. | ![]() |
Despite giving his fluffiest, FBeast (Fluffy Bunny East) runner Tyson Sacco could only do so much to drag his team out of the depths of despair over the course of the 4.6M run that was the final leg of the event. Competing with his boss (18M bike leg) and his boss' 12-year old daughter (800m swim leg), things started off great as the team's swimmer made like an angry tadpole and tore through the open water swim leg in Cayuga Lake's 70-degree water, emerging in 13:21, the 16th fastest swim split of the day among ~175 team and individual participants. On to the bike leg...Well, one thing that can be said is that the bike leg did not go well. Let's just leave it at that. The team's cyclist lost considerable time on the rolling 18M circuit from Taughannock Falls Park into Ithaca and back (recording the 156th fastest bike split) and suffice it to say that when Sacco left the transition area to begin the run the full bike racks surrounding him led him to believe that his team was essentially DFL. Tearing into the hilly run with perhaps a bit too much adrenaline, Sacco was already hurting at the uphill 1 and 2-mile marks (passed in 5:55 and 6:15 respectively). The course flattened to the 3-mile mark (5:13) and poured steeply downhill to 4-miles (4:32), finishing up with a downhill to flat final 0.6M. By the time he hit the finish line, Sacco was in 47th place overall, 6th among the 20 teams competing, and had passed approximately 100 runners, many of whom were walking or in such a serious survival shuffle in the first 2-miles that Sacco felt bad about blowing by them so easily. In any case, total disaster was averted, and though muddied, the good name of Fluffy Bunny lives on to frolic another day.
