Silver Buckle here I come...
Congratulations are in order for FBTC's own big Ben Berkowitz. Ben just completed the Western States 100 Mile trail race. He finished 100.2M in 51st place at 23:10, earning the coveted Silver Belt Buckle that only sub-24 hour finishers get. Great job, Ben! Ben is shown here exiting the aid station at the 38 mile mark on a very hot (100+ degrees) day... only 62 to go!Posted by | Tue, 06/30/09 01:27AM | Permalink
FBTC Six Pack, Superbowl 10k, Feb. 1, 2009
Though unofficial (due to some registration BS), the Bunnies' first foray into centipede-style racing ended in a victory. The team of David Olds, new Bunny Ben Berkowitz, Wayne Chen, Kevin Purcell, Tyson Sacco, and Peter Birney romped to 9th overall and 1st centipede/six-pack at Sunday's Redondo Beach Superbowl 10k. The mighty Bunnies rolled in at 34:50 and received much crowd support thanks to their fashion-forward choice of bright fuschia lycra. Yep. That's what happened.Full results

FBTC Masters = National Champs in Spokane!
Get ready for a three-peat, people! Hopefully they'll encounter better weather in 2009 in Lexington, KY, but the Fluffy Bunnies masters squad seems to just get better with each passing year. This year in Spokane, they rolled to a 58 - 77 victory over Fleet Feet Racing of Boulder, Colorado despite the fact that Fleet Feet's all-star squad came down from altitude and was led by race winner and trail and mountain running star Simon Gutierrez.
Here's how FBTC's winning team shaped up against Fleet Feet...
Gutierrez (1st, age 42, 33:50) pretty much beat down the whole field in the very cold and windy conditions and was quickly followed across the line by Fleet Feet's #2, James Johnson (4th, age 40, 34:25). Then the team race advantage flipped in the Bunnies' direction as the FBTC 1-2-3 group of Dave Schumacher (age 40, 34:31), Pete Magill (age 47, 34:42), and Christian Cushing-Murray (age 41, 34:45) packed it up in 6th, 7th, and 8th places, respectively. Fleet Feet's 3rd man, Andrew Ames (age 45, 34:52) got across the line in 11th to keep the team race close through three.
At this point, team scores were:
Fleet Feet = 1+4+11 = 16
FBTC = 6+7+8 = 21
Despite great front packs for both teams, the superior depth of the FBTC squad would prove to be the difference. The tight team race came to a quick end as Jeff Ambos (age 47, 35:29) and Kevin Vidana-Barda (age 41, 35:35) crossed the line in 18th and 19th, respectively. Both were well ahead of Fleet Feet's 4th and 5th men, Richard Dissly (27th, age 43, 36:04) and Bernie Boettcher (34th, age 46, 36:44).
Final Team Standings - USATF XC Club National Championship - Masters Men
1. Fluffy Bunny Track Club - 58
2. Fleet Feet Racing, Boulder - 77
3. Bowerman AC - 100

Birney PRs at 5k, gains respect.
Seriously though, hats off to our own Peter Birney. First he tackled the marathon, and now he's dipped under the 16-minute barrier.Peter ran a gutsy and steady race at Oxy to crush his previous best and lower his PR to 15:51.58. Full results.

Pete Magill gets extra fluffy!
FBTC Masters Star Pete Magill has been tearing up the track this spring. Running several American Masters Records. Go Pete!
First up was the 3k and Pete lowered his own M45 record to 8:36.86 at the 2008 Trojan Relays. See this post over at MastersTrack.com for more, and see this thread at Letsrun.com for Pete's recap of his 3k record run.
Then, a week later, at the Ben Brown Invitational at Mt. SAC, Pete took on the 5k and put the M45 record way down there at 14:34.27, a 10-second improvement on his own record from last year! Lots more info on this race, including a recap and news of Tony Young dipping under Pete's 3k record indoors at UW's big oval can be found over at MastersTrack.com.
Recent races at 1500m (notably at Steve Scott and the Oxy Invitational) suggest that Pete may be on track (no pun intended) to take a shot at the M45 record at that distance as well. The current record is 3:56.39. Maybe they'll set up a camera at the 1500m mark at the Master's Mile up in Oregon at the end of May?
In older news, Pete also did a nice job of capturing the "Fluffy Ethos" in a post on the MastersTrack.com forums. Check it out.
As an aside, and a quick plug for our club sponsor, Nike, Pete is loving the new Ventulus 2 spike, and David Olds had great things to say about the new Luna Racer. The SportBand is also a new favorite.
